I am a lifelong ally of the LGBTQ+ community and believe LGBTQ+ individuals should have the same rights as all other Americans. We have witnessed remarkable progress in advancing LGBTQ+ rights, such as the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize gay marriage, and the recent enactment of the Respect for Marriage Act, which safeguards the federal right to same-sex marriage. However, LGBTQ+ Americans still lack many protections and face numerous legal challenges as our current patchwork of anti-discrimination laws are insufficient. These gaps leave millions without a guaranteed right to rent an apartment, eat at a restaurant, utilize public goods and accommodations, apply for a credit card, or keep their jobs simply because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. That is why in Congress, I would champion the Equality Act – legislation that would provide consistent and explicit anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ Americans, just as there are protections against religious, racial, and ethnic discrimination nationwide. LGBTQ+ individuals should have access to essential services without fearing harassment or discrimination, and above all every American deserves a fair chance to provide a home for their families.
I am incredibly alarmed by the disturbing rise in attacks on gay and transgender youth across the nation. As a member of Congress, I will advocate for policies that ensure LGBTQ+ individuals are not discriminated against in adoption or foster care, protect LGBTQ+ youth from bullying and harassment, and uphold the rights of transgender students to access facilities that align with their gender identity. I am committed to being an ally and an unwavering voice for equality under the law.
